Kisspeptin is a small chain of amino acids found in the body. It acts like a switch that turns on the system responsible for reproduction. Scientists study it because it tells the brain to release hormones needed for growth and having children. It is often looked at by researchers who want to understand how the body controls these natural cycles.

In simple terms, this peptide works by waking up specific cells in the brain. Once these cells are awake, they send signals to start the production of important chemicals. These chemicals help the body grow and mature properly. It is mainly used in research to see if it can fix problems where these signals are too weak or missing.

While it shows promise in studies, it is not a medicine you can buy at a store. Most of the proof comes from lab work, not from wide use in people. Scientists are still testing to see if it is safe for humans. Because it is powerful, it must be handled with great care to avoid causing harm.

Mechanism of Action

Kisspeptin is the product of the KISS1 gene and the endogenous ligand of the KISS1R receptor (formerly GPR54) on hypothalamic GnRH neurons. It is the master upstream activator of GnRH (and thus LH/FSH) release and the pivotal trigger of puberty. Synthetic kisspeptin is in clinical trials for reproductive medicine (e.g., oocyte maturation in IVF, hypogonadism).
