Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas, which is an organ in your belly that sits behind your stomach. It acts like a key that lets sugar move from your blood into your body's cells to give them energy. Doctors use this medicine to help people whose bodies do not make enough insulin on their own, a problem often called diabetes. Without enough insulin, sugar stays in the blood and can make you very sick over time.

The main job of insulin is to keep your blood sugar at a safe level. When you eat, your food turns into sugar, and insulin helps your body use that sugar right away or store it for later. This stops your blood sugar from getting too high, which can damage your eyes, heart, and kidneys. By taking insulin, people with diabetes can lead healthy lives and avoid serious health problems caused by high blood sugar.

Scientists are still learning new things about how insulin works and how it connects to sleep and daily habits. While we know insulin is essential for life, the exact amount each person needs can change based on what they eat and how much they move. It is very important to follow a doctor's advice because taking too much or too little can be dangerous. Research shows that managing blood sugar well helps prevent long-term health issues.

mg vs mcg: one milligram (mg) equals 1,000 micrograms (mcg) — multiply by 1,000 going from mg to mcg, divide by 1,000 going from mcg to mg. Mixing the two up is a thousand-fold dosing error: 1 mg taken instead of 1 mcg is a 1,000× overdose; 1 mcg instead of 1 mg is a 1,000× underdose.
