Parathyroid hormone is a special chemical made by four tiny glands in your neck. These glands sit right behind your thyroid, which is a larger gland shaped like a butterfly. The main job of this hormone is to control the amount of calcium in your blood. Calcium is very important because it helps your bones stay strong and your nerves work the right way. Doctors often study this hormone to help people with bone problems or kidney issues. When your body needs more calcium, these glands release the hormone into your blood.

It tells your bones to let go of some calcium and your gut to absorb more from food. It also helps your kidneys hold onto calcium instead of letting it leave in urine. If your blood calcium is too high, the glands stop making the hormone. This keeps your body balanced and healthy. It acts like a switch that turns on and off to manage calcium levels. Scientists are still learning new ways this hormone can help sick people.

Some research shows it might help stem cells grow better, which could heal the body. However, using this hormone as a medicine can be tricky. If you have too much, it can make you feel sick, tired, or cause kidney stones. If you have too little, you might have muscle cramps or tingling. Doctors must check your blood carefully to make sure the levels are just right.
