Hepcidin is a tiny substance made mostly in the liver. It acts like a master switch for iron in the body. It is not a medicine you buy, but a natural part of the blood. Doctors and scientists look at it to understand health. It helps stop the body from absorbing too much iron from food. It also keeps iron from leaving storage cells. This is important because too much iron can be bad for organs. This substance works by blocking a door called ferroportin.

Ferroportin lets iron out of cells and into the blood. When hepcidin levels are high, the doors stay shut. This traps iron inside cells. When levels are low, the doors open, and iron enters the blood. It also helps fight germs like bacteria and fungus. It is part of the body's defense system. This is why it is linked to sickness and swelling. Scientists are still learning exactly how it works in different people.

High levels can cause low iron in the blood. Low levels can lead to too much iron. This can happen in diseases like hemochromatosis. There are tests to measure it, but it is not a common vitamin. It is mostly used for research right now. We do not know all the side effects yet. It is a complex piece of the body's puzzle.
