Calcitonin is a natural hormone made in the body, specifically by a gland in the neck called the thyroid. It is classified as a peptide hormone, which means it is a small protein that acts like a signal in the body. This hormone is very important because it helps control the level of calcium in the blood. Doctors and scientists often study it to understand how bones work and how to treat certain bone diseases. It is mostly used by medical professionals to help patients with bone problems.

The main job of calcitonin is to lower calcium levels in the blood when they get too high. It does this by telling the bones to stop releasing calcium and the kidneys to let more calcium leave the body in urine. This action helps protect the bones from losing too much strength. Because of this, it is used to treat a condition called Paget's disease and certain types of bone loss. It helps slow down the breakdown of bone, keeping them stronger for longer.

While calcitonin is helpful, there are still things researchers are trying to understand. It is not a first-choice treatment for all bone problems anymore because newer medicines often work better. It can sometimes cause side effects like nausea or flushing of the face. It is usually given as a shot or a nasal spray. Patients should always follow their doctor's advice when using this medicine to ensure it is safe and effective for their specific needs.
