Pramlintide is a man-made copy of a natural body chemical called amylin. Amylin is made by the same cells in the pancreas that make insulin. The man-made version is sold under the brand name Symlin. Doctors prescribe it for people with diabetes who already use insulin at mealtimes.
Pramlintide helps lower blood sugar after meals. It works by slowing down how fast food leaves the stomach, so sugar from food enters the blood more slowly. It also helps people feel full, which can lead to eating less and losing some weight. Studies show it does not lower blood sugar when sugar is given directly into a vein, which shows its effect is tied to how the gut handles food.
Pramlintide was approved by the FDA in 2005. It is given as a small shot under the skin, usually about 30 micrograms at a time. It leaves the body quickly, within about an hour. The main caution is that it can cause low blood sugar if not timed right with meals and insulin. It is expensive and can be hard to get, which limits how many people use it.
