Gastrin is a natural body chemical called a hormone. It is made in the stomach. Its job is to help your stomach work the way it should. Gastrin tells the stomach to make acid. Acid helps break down the food you eat.
Gastrin also helps the stomach squeeze and move food along. This movement is called motility. Without gastrin, your body would have a harder time digesting meals. Some people have too much gastrin. This can happen when small growths, called gastrinomas, make extra hormone.
These growths can start in the pancreas, stomach, or small intestine. Too much gastrin means too much acid, which can cause painful sores in the stomach. Doctors can test for this and treat it. Scientists are still learning about all the ways gastrin affects the body, and most of what is known comes from studies of sickness, not from healthy people.
