Bivalirudin is a special medicine used by doctors to help stop blood from clotting too much. It is a man-made copy of a small protein, or peptide, found in the saliva of leeches. Doctors mainly use this drug for people having heart procedures, like angioplasty, where they open up blocked blood vessels. It works as a direct thrombin inhibitor, which means it blocks a specific enzyme that helps blood turn into a clot.
