A peer-reviewed study in Scientific Reports examined whether semaglutide and tirzepatide reduce alcohol consumption in people with obesity. Researchers analyzed ~68,250 Reddit posts about GLP-1 and GLP-1/GIP drugs and ran a remote study with 153 drinkers (BMI ≥30) taking either drug or no medication. Alcohol-related posts (n=1,580) were 71% positive regarding reduced cravings and desire to drink. The participant study found significantly lower alcohol intake, drinks per episode, binge drinking odds, and AUDIT scores versus baseline and controls. The authors present this as real-world evidence supporting possible efficacy for alcohol use disorder comorbid with obesity.
