A new study in Annals of Internal Medicine found a twofold increase in GLP-1 agonist use among people without type 2 diabetes between 2011 and 2023, largely for weight loss. Among roughly 1 million new GLP-1 users, the proportion using these drugs without an FDA-approved indication rose from 0.21% in 2019 to 0.37% in 2023. The trend has contributed to worldwide shortages affecting diabetes patients who need these medications.
