The FDA approved a new indication for Wegovy (semaglutide), a GLP-1 receptor agonist, to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death, heart attack, and stroke in adults with cardiovascular disease and obesity or overweight. This makes it the first weight-loss medication approved for cardiovascular risk reduction. The decision was based on a trial of over 17,600 participants showing reduced major adverse cardiovascular events versus placebo.
