Somatostatin is a natural hormone found in the body that acts like a brake pedal for many other systems. It is produced in the brain, the stomach, and the pancreas. Its main job is to slow things down or stop them from happening too fast. Because it slows down growth and secretion, it is often grouped with medicines that control hormones. Doctors use this peptide to treat specific medical conditions where the body is producing too much of something, like extra hormones or blood in the gut.

The most important job of somatostatin is to control how the pancreas and gut work. It stops the pancreas from releasing digestive juices and hormones like insulin and glucagon. It also slows down the movement of food through the stomach and intestines. In medicine, it is used to stop bleeding from blood vessels in the gut and to treat tumors that release too many hormones. By blocking these actions, it helps the body stay in balance when systems are working too hard.

While somatostatin is very useful in hospitals, it has many effects that can be tricky to manage. Because it turns off so many body processes, it can cause side effects like stomach cramps, gas, and changes in blood sugar. The body breaks it down very quickly, so special long-lasting versions are often needed for treatment.
