Alpha-1 antitrypsin is a protein made by the liver that floats in the blood. Its main job is to protect the lungs from damage. Some people are born with genes that stop their body from making enough of this protein. This condition is passed down from parents to children. If the body does not have enough of this protein, the lungs can get hurt more easily over time. This can lead to breathing problems and lung sickness. The liver can also get sick because it tries to make the protein but fails, causing the protein to get stuck inside the liver cells.

When a person has low levels of this protein, their lungs are weak. The most common problem it causes is a disease called COPD, which makes it hard to breathe. It can also cause the lungs to act like they have asthma, with wheezing and coughing. In some cases, the skin can get painful red bumps. The protein works like a shield. It stops an enzyme in the body from eating away at healthy lung tissue. Without the shield, the tissue breaks down faster, especially in people who smoke or breathe in bad air.

Doctors can check for this problem with a simple blood test. If a person has very low levels, they might get extra protein put into their blood through a vein. This is called augmentation therapy. It helps replace the missing shield. There is no complete cure for the gene problem, but treatments can help. People with this condition must not smoke to keep their lungs safe. It is important for family members to get tested too, because the gene runs in families.
