Research published in Cell Death & Disease demonstrates that Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) can improve the mitochondrial stress response in Alzheimer's disease models. The study found that NMN supplementation restores NAD+ levels and activates the ATF4-dependent mitochondrial unfolded protein response (UPRmt), which helps clear toxic protein aggregates. In mice models, this mechanism reduced synaptic loss, brain atrophy, and memory deficits, suggesting NMN could be a viable therapeutic strategy for neurodegeneration.
