The study tests FOXO4-DRI, a peptide antagonist designed to perturb the FOXO4-p53 interaction, on senescent human chondrocytes. Disrupting the p53-FOXO4 interaction excludes p53 from the nucleus and directs it to mitochondria to induce apoptosis. FOXO4-DRI selectively removed senescent cells from in vitro expanded chondrocytes, building on the 2017 senescent-cell apoptosis work.
