A study published in Translational Psychiatry utilized a rat model of maternal separation to investigate cognitive impairment resembling schizophrenia. Researchers found that cognitive deficits were linked to mitochondrial dysfunction and reduced levels of NAD+ and SIRT3 in the hippocampus. The study demonstrated that supplementing with nicotinamide (NAM), a form of Vitamin B3, successfully restored the NAD+/SIRT3 axis, improved synaptic plasticity, and reversed cognitive decline.
