Cognitive peptides are studied for how the brain holds onto performance under stress, injury, and aging — neurotrophic signaling (BDNF in particular), stress-response regulation, and recovery after stroke or trauma. The best-known members aren't classic stimulants: they're fragments of naturally occurring neuropeptides that researchers study for tuning attention, memory, and stress reactivity without sedation.

The evidence base here has a distinctive shape. Semax and Selank were developed and approved in Russia, so their deepest human data comes from Russian clinical practice while most Western literature is preclinical. Cerebrolysin, a mixture of brain-derived peptides, has been trialed in humans across Europe and Asia for stroke and injury recovery. Regional approval is not FDA approval, and much of the broader interest still rests on early evidence.

How They Compare

Semax — an analog of a fragment of the ACTH hormone — is the most-studied of the three, with research on BDNF signaling and on recovery after stroke and optic-nerve injury. Selank, built from the immune peptide tuftsin, is studied for anxiety and stress regulation alongside cognition — unusual in being investigated as a non-sedating anxiolytic. Cerebrolysin is the most conventionally clinical of the group, with human trials in stroke recovery and vascular dementia.

Set expectations carefully here: approved in Russia doesn't mean FDA-approved, several headline findings come from small trials, and the nootropics market routinely runs ahead of the data. Each peptide's guide separates what the studies show from what vendors claim.
