Using UK Biobank data, this medRxiv preprint finds that higher plasma omega-3 levels are inversely associated with atrial fibrillation risk — the highest versus lowest total omega-3 quintile had roughly a 14% lower risk — and that fish oil supplement use showed no association with AF once age was adjusted continuously. This challenges the increased-AF signal from high-dose pharmaceutical omega-3 trials such as REDUCE-IT and STRENGTH, and the authors' updated meta-analysis showed 6-10% lower AF risk for higher blood levels of DHA, EPA, and docosapentaenoic acid.
