A study by the TransCODE Consortium presents a consensus landscape of the human proteome by validating the translation of non-canonical open reading frames (ncORFs). Analyzing over 95,000 proteomics experiments, researchers found that roughly 25% of 7,264 studied ncORFs produce detectable microproteins, which they term 'peptideins'. The study introduces an evolutionary framework to identify functional microproteins and confirms the biological necessity of one such peptidein derived from long non-coding RNA.
