Research from Columbia University indicates that the bone-derived hormone osteocalcin is necessary for exercise capacity in mice, monkeys, and humans. The study found that osteocalcin levels rise during physical activity, signaling muscles to uptake more glucose and nutrients. Notably, administering osteocalcin to older mice restored their exercise performance to levels comparable to young mice.
