Antibacterial macrocyclic peptides reveal a distinct mode of BamA inhibition | Nature Communications

Researchers used mRNA display to discover macrocyclic peptides that bind to the BamA protein in Gram-negative bacteria. These peptides inhibit outer membrane protein assembly, effectively killing the bacteria by blocking an essential cellular process. Molecular dynamics simulations indicate that these peptides function via a previously undescribed mechanism, trapping BamA in a conformation that halts the initiation of assembly.
