In the 24 June 2004 New England Journal of Medicine, Schuelke and colleagues reported a German boy born with gross muscle hypertrophy and unusually strong toddler-age movement, traced to an inherited myostatin loss. The case proved in people what mighty-mice experiments had shown: myostatin is the body's brake on muscle growth, and releasing it builds muscle.
